About Santos' Research Lab

The Santos' Research Lab is a theoretical research centre that specializes in computational simulations and modelling of advanced quantum materials. Our interdisciplinary team comprises researchers from a wide range of backgrounds, including condensed-matter physics, chemistry, materials science, computing, and information technologies. Our mission is to conduct innovative research that advances the boundaries of theoretical science and to train the next generation of quantum scientists.

Our team is made up of dedicated scientists who are passionate about their work. We come from diverse backgrounds and are united by our commitment to advancing quantum science and quantum technologies. Our research focuses on a broad range of topics, including the study of complex materials, the development of new algorithms and computational tools, and the exploration of fundamental physical phenomena. We collaborate with scientists from around the world and aim to make a positive impact on society through sustainable techniques.

Biography

Dr Santos received his PhD in 2011 from the Danish Technical University/University of the Basque Country with a European Honour. Then, he was awarded the highly prestigious and competitive John A. Paulson Postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard University to perform research on energy materials and method developments for functional devices. Whereas at Harvard, he featured the cover of the 2013 APS March Meeting in Baltimore, and had several of his figures included in the APS March Meeting Art Galleries 2013, 2014.

He moved to Stanford University in 2013 as an assistant staff scientist to undertake research on solid state chemistry (e.g., catalysis, organic semiconductor devices, 2D materials) and ultrafast chemical processes. Dr Santos moved to the UK in 2015 to start his research group at Queen’s University Belfast (QuB) as a VC Queen’s Fellow and has taken a leading role on the research of 2D materials and Energy Efficient Processes in QuB. He was promoted to a full Lectureship in 2019. Dr Santos is one of the recipients of the Charles Hatchett 2020 Award for his investigations on energy materials. He moved to The University of Edinburgh in 2020 to hold the position of Reader in Theoretical and Computational Condensed Matter Physics at the School of Physics and Astronomy, and the Institute for Condensed Matter and Complex Systems. He is a member of the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics. He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (FInstP) in 2023. He is also an EPSRC Fellow on advanced magnetic materials.
